Just about 3 hours from Charleston in a little town called Spartanburg, South Carolina, you’ll find a massive BMW production plant - in fact the first full BMW manufacturing facility outside of Germany. The 1150-acre, 7-million-square-foot campus employs 11,000 people and is the global center of production for the X models: that’s the X3, X4, X5, X6 and X7 - very X-citing!
A trip to the plant lets you learn X-cellent facts like these as you take the factory tour, and I can assure you it’s the real deal. Wearing headsets, safety goggles and keeping strictly in a single file line behind the green safety tape, you will witness the X-hausting assembly of the vehicles, half by huge robotic arms, half by an army of BMW Associates. More than 1500 cars are produced daily and exported to 125 countries - and if you think that sounds X-treme, you should see them being built! Watching them construct the right-hand driving models that were headed to the other side of the globe was X-tra cool.
Along with the Plant Tour, you will get to X-plore the Zentrum Museum. While not very large (more of a showroom than a museum), the Zentrum has some fantastic BMW’s on display, ranging from the very early models, including the Isetta (AKA the Bubble Car) to some that have been featured in movies (those X-plosive James Bond cars), to the newest hybrid models, and even some pure racing vehicles - X-hilirating!
Whether you're a BMW fanatic, have a passing interest in cars and technology, or are simply looking for a fun day trip in South Carolina, the BMW Zentrum Museum and Plant Tour is X-actly what you need!
