One of my favorite aspects of Charleston is that it is a harbor city, and I believe one of the best ways to see it is from the water. If you aren’t lucky enough to have a friend with a boat (I wish I did!) you can still experience the magic of a sunset on the water, thanks to the Daniel Island Ferry.
Normally, the Ferry runs a nautical shuttle service between the Downtown Charleston Maritime Center and Daniel Island. (The schedule changes seasonally, so check their website.) But the real treat for those in the know is the Sunset Harbor Cruise, a 90-minute jaunt that departs and returns to the Daniel Island Waterfront dock.
We booked our first Harbor Cruise on a Friday night after a fantastic dinner at Daniel Island’s hottest new restaurant, The Kingstide. (Check out my Ryan’s Review here). I highly recommend combining the two, as long as you don’t mind an early meal. We left The Kingstide and headed down the dock, where we were warmly greeted by the super-friendly staff. The vessel, while not huge, has plenty of space - both outdoor and indoor, if the weather is less than perfect. Our ride was calm and easy, and the sunset over Charleston as we passed under the Ravenel Bridge was spectacular.
And let’s not forget my favorite part: the already very reasonably-priced ticket includes complimentary beer and wine! And they are not shy with the refills - everytime my glass was nearing empty, one of the crew appeared with a bottle to top me off. Now that’s luxury service!
